Killdeer in the UK

A rare vagrant from North America with around 60 British records. The first was shot near Christchurch, then in Hampshire and now in Dorset, in April 1859. This century most have been on islands, with only a minority on the British mainland. Unlike most American waders, which arrive in autumn, Killdeers turn up mainly in winter and early spring. Recent birds include one on Skokholm and Skomer, Pembrokeshire, in November 2025. Most do not stay long.

Where and when to see a Killdeer

The Isles of Scilly have the most records, followed by the Outer Hebrides, Shetland, Cornwall and Devon. November to April is the main period, and arrivals are often linked to hard weather in North America. Look on short wet grass: airfields, golf courses, grazed fields, pool margins and beaches. Birds are loud and usually found quickly by island birders, but many leave within a day or two, so twitchers need to move fast.

Habitat, diet and field notes

Habitat: Short grass (rare vagrant).
Diet: Insects.
Field note: Double black breast-band.

How to identify a Killdeer

Larger and longer than a Ringed Plover, with a long tail that reaches well beyond the wingtips. Two black bands cross the white breast, which no other plover in Britain shows. The upperparts are brown and the rump and tail base are bright orange-rufous, obvious when the bird flies or fans its tail. Other features are a red ring round the eye, a long white wing bar and pale pinkish legs. It runs and stops like other plovers and bobs when nervous.

Call and song

Very vocal. The call is a loud, piercing 'kill-dee' or a drawn-out 'dee-dee-dee', rising in pitch, given whenever the bird is flushed. It often draws attention before the bird is seen. Heard something you cannot place? Bird Hear identifies UK birds from a 10 second recording, free in your browser.

Killdeer: quick answers

Has a Killdeer ever been seen in the UK?

Yes, around 60 times. The first was in 1859 and birds have appeared in most decades since. One visited the Pembrokeshire islands of Skokholm and Skomer in November 2025.

When is the best time to see Killdeer?

Winter and early spring, from November to April. That timing sets it apart from other American waders, which peak in September and October. Hard weather on the eastern seaboard of North America is often followed by arrivals here.

What does a Killdeer eat?

Insects, worms and other small invertebrates picked from short grass and mud. It is as much a bird of fields and lawns as of the shore, which is why vagrants in Britain favour grazed pasture, airfields and golf courses.
