Booted Eagle in the UK

Booted Eagle is an extreme vagrant, and its place on the British List rests on a single bird. A pale immature seen in Kent on 28 September 1999 went on to tour Cornwall, Somerset, the Bristol area, Kent again and Orkney, and was last reported in June 2000. Doubts about its origin kept it in Category D, a holding category outside the main list, for 25 years. On 12 August 2025 the records committee moved it to Category A as a wild bird. That decision drew on fresh sightings in Cornwall in 2024 and 2025, including a pale bird that wintered near Marazion.

Where and when to see a Booted Eagle

There is nowhere to expect one. West Cornwall has produced the recent sightings, around Land's End, Porthgwarra and Marazion, in autumn, winter and spring. Any future bird is most likely in the south or south-west during the migration months, when the species moves between Europe and Africa. It will probably be picked out soaring with Buzzards over a valley or headland on a fine late morning. News breaks through the bird information services, and photographs of both wing surfaces settle the identification.

Habitat, diet and field notes

Habitat: Mature forest with clearings.
Diet: Birds, small mammals.
Field note: Two morphs: dark and pale.

How to identify a Booted Eagle

About the size of a Common Buzzard but shaped like a small eagle: longer, more parallel-edged wings with six clear 'fingers', and a longer, square-cut tail. It soars on flat wings. Pale birds are white below with black flight feathers, a contrast that no Buzzard shows so cleanly. Dark birds are brown below with a paler wedge on the inner primaries and a paler tail. Both forms share a pale band across the upperwing, a pale crescent on the rump and a small white spot where each wing joins the body, the 'landing lights' that show head-on.

Call and song

Silent away from the nest, so do not expect to hear one in Britain. On the breeding grounds it gives a high, piping 'kli-kli-kli', closer to a wader than an eagle. Heard something you cannot place? Bird Hear identifies UK birds from a 10 second recording, free in your browser.

Booted Eagle: quick answers

Has a Booted Eagle ever been seen in the UK?

Yes. A pale bird roamed Britain and Ireland in 1999 and 2000, and both pale and dark birds were seen in Cornwall from 2024. For years the 1999 bird was written off as a possible escape, until it was accepted as wild in August 2025.

Is the Booted Eagle rare in the UK?

Extremely. It is one of the hardest birds of prey to see here, with only a few individuals ever reported. The recent run in Cornwall may mean more will follow, but it is far too early to call it regular.

Where can I see a Booted Eagle in the UK?

Nowhere reliably. If one is found and stays, as the Marazion bird did in early 2025, it will be widely reported and watchable from public roads and footpaths. For a planned sighting, go to Spain or southern France between April and September, where it is a familiar bird.
